Looking for a home in Downtown Victoria?
You’re not alone! Victoria is one of the most sought after places to live in the world! Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia and located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. In downtown Victoria, you’ll find a mix of high end, luxury condo’s and newer highrises, many of which provide residents with breathtaking views of Victoria’s world-famous inner harbor, coastline, and Olympic mountain range.
Being one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, the city has done wonders to keep the historic vibe to this day. The BC Legislative buildings and newly restored Empress Hotel are both staples in the downtown region and the citys China Town is the second oldest in North America! Don’t forget to check out Fan Tan Alley, Canada’s narrowest street which serves home to over a dozen shops and entranceway into China Town.
Don’t let the historic structures fool you though, Victoria is home to a booming technology sector that has grown to be one of Victoria’s most valuable industries, overtaking tourism and government. With the influx of tech jobs, new businesses, such as hip coffee shops, restaurants, and craft brewpubs have been flourishing!
The original inhabitants of James Bay were the Swenghwung people who were part of the Lekwungen people of the Coast Salish and whose descendants today are known as the Songhees First Nation. Even after the aboriginal inhabitants allegedly sold the land to the Hudson’s Bay Company, remains of fortifications at Holland Point and of burial grounds at Laurel Point remained. The neighbourhood takes its name from the shallow inlet James Bay that forms part of Victoria’s Inner Harbour, named for James Douglas. Settled early after the establishment of Fort Victoria in 1843, much of the present-day neighbourhood was originally part of Ogden’s Fields Farms.
With a vast history and one of Victoria’s oldest neighbourhoods James Bay is highly sought after as the properties range from historic remodeled character homes with some of the most famous being around the parliament and Emily Carr house, to high rise condo and apartment buildings bordering Beacon Hill Park.
Homes in this area have been reaching record sales and with limited availability in this neighbourhood the opportunities may be limited however for buyers and sellers alike this is prime Victoria real estate and can be purchased for high return rental properties as well as a way of life unlike most.
